Choosing a platform is the first decision when you open an online store in Morocco, and it shapes your monthly costs for years. The two most common options are Shopify and WooCommerce. Both work well — but not for the same businesses.
What Moroccan customers expect
Before comparing platforms, start from how people buy. Most online orders in Morocco are still paid cash on delivery, many customers prefer to confirm on WhatsApp, and delivery prices differ between cities. A store that forces card payment or hides the phone number loses sales, whatever the platform.
Shopify: fast, reliable, monthly fee
- Strengths: very stable, secure, easy to manage, great apps and themes, quick to launch.
- Watch out for: a monthly plan plus paid apps, and transaction fees on some setups. Costs add up as you install more apps.
- Best for: brands that want to start quickly and focus on marketing rather than technology.
WooCommerce: flexible, no platform subscription
- Strengths: no monthly platform fee, full control, easy to add Moroccan-specific features (cash on delivery rules, delivery by city, WhatsApp ordering).
- Watch out for: you need good hosting, updates and security maintenance.
- Best for: stores that want to control costs and customise the buying journey.
When a custom store makes sense
If you already have a shop with a POS system, several warehouses or wholesale prices, a custom store (we build them with Laravel) can share one stock between the shop and the website, which removes manual double entry — the most common source of errors we see.
Our quick rule
- Under 50 products and you want to start this month: Shopify or a simple WooCommerce store.
- Hundreds of products and tight margins: WooCommerce.
- Shops + website + stock to sync: custom.
